12:35 pm - Introducing Reed Nicholas Coggan
Lots of people have been asking about the story of Reed’s arrival on Wednesday August 8th at 9:52pm. It all started on Tuesday night at around 10pm when I got up off the couch to go to bed. My water broke! Off to the Cambridge hospital we went. Pretty much as soon as we arrived they told us that their nursery was full. This was a problem since Reed was only 35 weeks (one month early) they figured he would need to spend some time in the nursery so we were told we would have to transfer to Guelph. So at 2 in the morning Dave and I were driving ourselves to Guelph General hospital. We spent the night in the hospital “trying” to get some sleep.

The next morning my contractions weren’t really progressing so I was told I would have to be induced. I was given an epidural and started on oxytocin. Things started to get going better in the afternoon and by 10pm our baby boy was born!! He was 5 pounds 14.9 ounces (almost but not quite 6 pounds). Pretty big for being a whole month early. He was taken to the nursery so they could monitor his temperature etc and he stayed there for two days. I had to go there to feed him every 3 hours which was kind of annoying but by Friday he was allowed to come to my room.

We did have a few problems since he was a little early. He slept all the time which made feeding difficult. He didn’t know that when he was hungry he should wake up and tell us and also didn’t have the suckling reflex. He was also jaundiced which made him even more tired. All this made feeding him very difficult. We worked through all this and now feeding is going really well. He didn’t have to get treated for his jaundice and we all got to go home on Sunday.

He’s now over a week old and we are both doing very well. Reed has his first doctors’ appointment on Monday so we’ll see how much he weighs now. Based on his currently large appetite I’m thinking quite a bit! So far we have been out for walks, to the mall and to Tim Horton’s for lunch. He is just the cutest boy ever but maybe we’re a little biased. ;)

09:15 pm - Thanksgiving weekend
Yay for long weekends!  Thanksgiving is always a nice time of year.  The weather has been great this weekend, surprisingly warm.  I have some gardening to do tomorrow so I'm hoping it's still nice.  We just had friends over for turkey dinner.  Yummy!  The usual with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, beans, corn etc...  I have also had a whole bottle of wine to myself so I'm feeling pretty good.  Dave is currently watching CSI from Thursday night which I've already seen so I'm spending my time playing on the interporn.

We are leaving for Italy on Friday!!!  I can't wait!!!!  I'm mostly looking forward to the break from work, spending two weeks alone with my hubby and the cool things to see in Italy.  I think we're all set.  We just need to pack.  I bought a new digital camera, we got new passports and we just need to get some euros.  I also bought a phrase book of Italian.  I was looking through it and currently it's not helping much.  When I look at the words I think of them in French because that's the only other language I know.  I'm hoping that once we get to Italy I'll figure it out.  We're on a tour so I'm thinking it won't matter too much that we know absolutely no Italian.

Alright, I'm having trouble putting sentences together right now (too much wine).  Better go before this makes no sense.

Ciao!

It took me 30 minutes to drive from highway 25 to Trafalgar road on the 401 this morning (should normally take ~2 minutes).

Why can't people drive when it's raining out???

05:30 pm - update
I can't believe it's been so long since I've posted on my journal.  Not a good sign.  I've been incredibly busy with work and life stuff but nothing too exciting has been going on.  Every time I think of something I should post about about by the time I get around to doing it I have forgotten what I was going to talk about.  Oh well

My friend left work at the beginning of August so I guess it's been about 2 months.  It hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be.  I have figured out that I really miss him as a friend but he was a royal ass to work with.  We are now emailing quite a bit so that seems to fill the void.  The problem at work now is that I am the only chemist left in the group.  We had about 5 when I started 4 years ago.  That leaves me with all the work.  It's been crazy.  It keeps me occupied which is good but my manager doesn't seem to understand the fact that the more work you have to do the longer it takes to get any one thing done.  The ironic thing is that I figure he must have less work to do since he's lost all the people that used to work for him so now he spends all his time bugging me.  Arrrrgh.  Just leave me alone.

In other news...  We got to practice putting out fires with fire extinguishers today.  We had to watch a video all about using fire extinguishers and then we all went outside to practice using one to put out a fire.  The fire was really big too.  I was really scared watching other people do it.  My friend and I had a big fire in his lab in January which really freaked me out.  We had to use the fire extinguisher on that so that's what I kept thinking about.   But once it was my turn to practice putting the fire out it was ok.  I even did it twice.  I am very proud of myself.  One note: fire extinguishers are really heavy

I got an award at work this afternoon.  Yippeee for me.  My manager screwed up telling me about the meeting where I was supposed to be getting it so I didn't actually get it in front of everyone but that's ok.

I'm going to get my hair cut short on Friday.  I've been growing my hair long for the past few years now and it's actually getting pretty long.   I'm just sick of it.  I think I'm not really a long hair type of person.  It just takes too much time and effort.  I am generally not so happy with it so I'm going to cut it off.  I hope I like my new haircut.

I have to take my little dog Brandee to the vet tonight.  It's just for her annual checkup.  I have never taken her to the vet before though since we didn't get her until October of last year.  I hope she behaves herself.

It's my big dog Baylea's 4th birthday on Saturday.  Yay for Baylea.  I can't believe he's going to be 4.  Time goes by so fast.  It feels like yesterday when we brought him home when he was 8 weeks old.

Only 3 more weeks til we leave for Italy!

I found this tidbit in a recent Maclean's magazine:

Hazardous when Dull

People who are bores and pains in the butt can compromise your health.  Eli Finkel, a psychology professor at Chicago's North-Western University, has found that working with dullards or difficult personalities rapidly saps mental energy, leading to stress and exhaustion.  One reason is that summoning the patience to control oneself in the presence of troublesome, inefficient and boring workers is a far more demanding and energy-consuming task than previously thought.

I think this is totally true!  I work with a bunch of bores and pains in the butt and they always stress me out.  Maybe now I have an excuse to tell them to go to hell... ;)

The other thing I thought of was who is funding this research?  Should we be spending money on this?

07:31 pm - Smoke Detector Nightmare
It started about a month ago.  Dave was away and in the middle of the night the smoke detector went off.  It wasn't just a little beep either.  It probably went off for 30 seconds or more.  Enough time for me to turn on a light, put on my glasses and start getting out of bed.  When I went out into the hallway there was nothing and the alarm had stopped.  No more sleep for me that night.  If freaked me out.

The alarm has been going off more and more over the last month.  Sometimes it goes off 2 or 3 times a night.  The thing I can't figure out is why it doesn't go off any other time of the day???  Must be Murphy's law or something.

So good old Google told me that you're supposed to clean out your smoke detectors every month.  Who knew?  I had never done that so I guess it's been about 4 years.  I vaccuumed the one upstairs but it still went off that night.  Dave unplugged that one (they are hard wired into the ceiling).  The one downstairs went off that night.  So I vaccuumed that one but it still went off the next night.  Dave has now replaced the one upstairs and unplugged the one downstairs.  Hopefully that was the problem one and we can buy a replacement and finally get some sleep!

No sleep makes me a very bitchy girl!

04:50 pm - Other news
There are five baby bunnies living in my backyard. I go check on them everyday. I really hope they leave soon so I can let my dogs in my backyard again. Damn wildlife. I think it might still be awhile before they leave since they're still very little. They are soooo cute though.

We're heading to Brockville for the long weekend. I can't wait!! I definitely need some relaxation. Dave will be golfing every single day so I'm going to do some reading, shopping, tv watching, napping... Yay, I'm so excited.

We booked our trip to Italy!!! We ended up booking a tour since there were so many places I wanted to see but I didn't want to tour around on our own to that many places. We will be flying in and out of Rome and on the way see Naples, Capri, Sorrento, Pompeii, Assisi, Pomposa, Venice, Pisa, Florence, Siena and back to Rome again. Crazy. I hope we really like it since it was really expensive. I'm sure we will though. It's Italy!!! yay!!!! So we leave on October 13 and come back on October 26.

Things to do for the trip: Buy an Italian phrase book, buy a new suitcase, buy a new camera (possibly), get new passports and I'm sure there's more than that but I can't think of anything else right now
